I've been playing around with Prezi and I will admit that it's a lot more dynamic than using Powerpoint. There's movement and effects and there in some ways it is a bit easier to work with than its predecessor. I saw a youtube video on the greatest Prezi presentation ever and it showed me just what a presentation could look like. However putting one of those together, overall, is a lot harder than it looks.
When I played around with it, I noticed that the presentation template I chose had only a certain number of bubbles and, once I was out, that was the end. There was no way to put anymore bubbles up. At least, that is what it seems like, to me, so far. Then, there's the matter of videos. When I tried playing my trial presentation, I planted a youtube video into one of my bubbles. Unfortunately, it did not play, when the presentation was underway. So, I guess there is something you have to do for it to stay on that bubble long enough to play the video and for the video to actually play, once it gets to the bubble. The video, to me, was really important because it helped drive in the point.
All the readings for this week surround one main theme, that powerpoint is boring and everything conducive to producing such a presentation is, practically, guaranteed to put people to sleep. I have to agree with that. These last few weeks I have had to go to all these all day seminars for work and everyone does theirs with a powerpoint. When we break for lunch, the first thing everyone says is that they went to sleep as soon as the lights were off.
It's not to say that prezi doesn't have its downs. Some of the presentations I have seen are a little hard on the eyes. All that quick movement and rotation does get a little overwhelming. That "Best Prezi Ever" I mentioned earlier was incredible with it's rotating around town to different points; however, it rotates everywhere and that got a little distracting. Also, to some extent, it was still like a powerpoint. Each stop just showed a particular point that you would see in the same way as if on powerpoint.
Technology in presentation has come a long way. They are not entirely snooze proof, yet, but they are getting there.
